Reflections of a journey.

Winter 2019

Nagoya - a brief stop.

We arrived at the Nagoya airport and - after a brief Hitsumabushi Unagi lunch - went on our way to Takayama, Gifu. After the red-eye flight, I was glad to settle down on a seat on my favorite transportation mode - a Japanese train.

Takayama

This is a quaint small city that is a victim of over-tourism. The first night, it took us 2 hours to find a restaurant that would take us in. We hoped that the next day is better.

Spoiler: It was not. We had the best beef yakiniku I ever had though.

Shirakawa-go

We were lucky. Snow fell in a torrent shortly after we have arrived, though it was still difficult to find nice colors to contrast the brown and white of the village. At the end, some of my favorite shots came from this village.

Side-note: I did not realize that Shirakawa-go is the setting for Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni until we stepped into the temple and was overloaded with the Higurashi tributes. I avoided eating any onigiri in the village.

Kanazawa

A brief stop to catch our breath. Wished I could have stayed one day longer.

Kinosaki-Onsen

A choice made in the train to stay on rather than to head to Amanohashidate. I consider it a good choice.

Your mileage may vary. Also, amazing puddings.

Osaka - Kobe

40km - 10 hour walk. Because I can.

No, really.

Miyashima Island, Hiroshima

The main attraction (the gate) is under renovation, but I am surprised at how many interesting things are in this island. Also, really really good beer!
